Pricey, but amazingly solid and appears to be impenetrable!

Very heavy duty, I've seen videos of testing this lock and nobody is getting through this thing.

When you put this heavy duty trailer lock on a flat lip 2 5/16 inch coupler it gives instant peace of mind because you know no one is casually hooking up to your trailer. At 22 pounds of hardened cast steel, I saw first hand in a demo while Altor was here at etrailer, that the fins make it about as close to an uncuttable trailer lock as you will find, and that makes it a true power tool resistant lock. I like how the disc detainer stainless steel core and half circle keys make it tough to pick or copy, which adds security well beyond a standard pin style lock. I think the way Altor built this with an O ring seal and a combination of e coat and powder coat really shows how much thought went into making it a weather resistant coupler lock that can handle rain, snow, and freezing conditions without seizing up. It installs in seconds, just twist off the stainless cap, slide it over the coupler, lock it, and replace the cap. This is best for anyone who wants proven protection on higher value trailers, although it may feel like more than you need if you only store a smaller utility trailer.

by:

For me, what stands out about this heavy duty trailer lock is how practical it feels when you are actually using it on a flat lip coupler. I think it is a smart option for campers and larger trailers because it combines security with a process that is straightforward enough to use every day. The hardened steel body with those fins is what makes it a power tool resistant lock, and in real cut tests I have seen it hold strong where basic locks fail. I like that the key system is different from standard ones since that makes it harder for anyone to pick or duplicate, and you still get four keys so you are covered. What matters most is that once it is on your Demco, Curt, or Fulton coupler, it gives the impression that the trailer is locked down for good, which is a big part of why it works

by:

I’ll admit I was skeptical when Altor brought their ICON lock into the shop because I've seen plenty of beefy looking coupler locks be taken off with an angle grinder. After watching them actually go at it with power tools, I came away pretty impressed. The design uses thick steel, so even if you start grinding, you’re just chewing through layers. They also built the lock face to spin if someone tries drilling, which just eats up the bit instead of the lock. On top of that, the keys are unique enough that there won't be duplicates just floating around. The stainless body and weather-sealed cap mean it holds up outside, which is huge for trailers that sit in lots or barns for months at a time. To me, it feels like a real step above the typical coupler lock — and considering what you’ve got riding on your trailer, this is one of those cases where a tougher lock is worth it.

by:

It’s easy to look at a trailer lock and assume it’s secure, but I’ve seen how fast an angle grinder can take most of them off. So when Altor showed up with the ICON lock, I wanted to see it put to the test. They cut through a very common coupler lock here in our shop during the demo, and you can watch that in my video. Then they put the grinder on the ICON, and it just wouldn’t give in. The heavy cast steel with its fins forces the blade to fight through layers, and the lock face itself spins when you try to drill it. That means the tool wears down instead of the lock. The key system is also designed so it cannot be copied at your local hardware store, which is another layer of security. The body is stainless, the cap seals out the weather, and it’s built to last outside. What stood out to me too is that ICON makes these to fit specific couplers. So be sure to check your trailer style before you order, because getting the right fit makes the lock even harder to defeat. From what I’ve seen, this is one of the toughest options out there.

by:

I’ve tested a lot of trailer locks over the years and most of them fold once an angle grinder hits. When Altor brought their ICON lock into the shop, I figured it would be more of the same. They cut straight through a well-known coupler lock during their demo here, and you can see that in my video. Then they put the ICON to the grinder, and it barely scratched it. The thick cast steel with its fin design makes it incredibly hard to get down to the core, and the lock face spins against a drill bit so it just ruins the bit. The keys are built in a way that keeps them from being copied at the hardware store, and the stainless body with a sealed cap keeps the lock working even after sitting outside. I also like how these locks are made to fit specific couplers, so take a look at your trailer and make sure you get the right match. After seeing it in action, I can say it’s a huge step up in trailer security.

If you’ve got a boat trailer with a Titan or Dexter flat-lip 2-5/16-inch coupler, you already know the trailer is what makes it easy for someone to take off with your boat. In fact, about three out of four stolen boats are taken from the owner’s driveway or yard at night. That’s why I was impressed by the ICON AL63DQ coupler lock. It’s a heavy 22-pound chunk of cast steel with fins that make it tough for saws or grinders to get anywhere, and the special half-moon key keeps it from being picked like the cheaper locks out there. I like that the stainless cap seals out water and grit, because most boat trailers spend a lot of their time outdoors. This is a good option for the boaters out there with a Dexter or Titan flat lip coupler.

  • How To Lock Coupler To Prevent Theft On 2019 Keystone Cougar With 2-5/16" Long Flat Coupler
Jerry, the # AL63DQ was made for that style of travel trailer coupler. It slides straight on from the front, and it won't affect propane tanks or anything like that, so no need to worry there. The lock body is heavy, but that bulk is part of what keeps thieves away - it resists grinders and sledgehammers. Do you usually store the Cougar at a campground or at home?

  • Heavy Duty Tool-Proof 2-5/16" Coupler Lock For Camper Parked In Driveway
Karen, that’s a fair question. For a camper parked at home, a simpler lock will deter most opportunists. But the # AL63DQ is peace of mind if you live in an area where trailers walk away overnight. Think of it like insurance - you might never need that extreme protection, but when you do, it pays off. I'd rather just spend a little more on the best lock you can buy, and not have to worry as much. Do you also have storage yard access, or is the camper always at home when parked long term?

  • How Does ICON Trailer Coupler Lock Compare To Master Lock 379DAT?
Derek, great question. The Master Lock # 379DAT works fine as a deterrent, but it can be defeated with basic tools. The ICON # AL63DQ takes it several steps further: it’s cast from a single block of hardened steel that’s as tough as any saw or drill bit, and it has an anti-drill lock face that just spins if you try to bore it out. In real tests, it shrugs off sawzalls, sledgehammers, and 5 inch angle grinders. This ICON lock is for couplers with a rather large, flat lip on the coupler....

  • Do Alter Icon Trailer Coupler Locks Add Tongue Weight To Trailer? How Much Do They Weigh?
Olivia, each ICON weighs around 20lbs depending on the model. That heft is what makes them tough to tamper with. You’ll notice the weight when you lift it, but once installed on the coupler, it doesn’t affect anything. And it gets removed obviously when you tow the trailer, so it won't be adding tongue weight or anything like that (unless you throw it in a tool box at the front of the trailer or in the bed of your truck behind the rear axle - then it would count towards tongue weight). Do...

  • What Makes Alter ICON Trailer Coupler Locks Better Than Other Options?
Pam, good question. The big differences are: patented radial fins that block grinders up to 5", one-piece hardened steel (not welded), an anti-drill face that spins drill bits, and a disc-detainer key that’s almost impossible to pick. It’s the only trailer lock lineup designed to resist power tools, not just hammers and bolt cutters. All in all, I'd spend the money on this bad boy if you have an expensive trailer with expensive equipment in it, or just want to make sure you have the best...

  • Can ICON AL38DQ Cast Coupler Lock Work On Rolled Lip Coupler ?
Dale, the Cast Style Lock # AL38DQ is only for cast housings -if you’ve got a rolled-lip coupler, it may work, but it depends on what you mean exactly by rolled lip. Some cast couplers do have a little bit of a rolled lip, such as the bulldog # 3370091562. If your coupler lip is actually long and flat like # DM13203-52 then you'd instead want the Flat Lip Lock # AL63DQ. Do you know if your coupler is flat-fronted or more rounded?

  • Is The ICON Trailer Coupler Lock Hard To Install?
Troy, some ICONs are snug because they’re precision-cast, but that’s part of their security. The # AL43DQ slides on pretty smoothly over the Hit-N-Hitch profile. The lock core uses a disc-detainer “outdoor profile” key that's designed to resist picking and survive in the elements. I've attached a demonstration video for you, but basically you'll unscrew (by hand) the metal cap covering the key hole, then unlock it and slide the pin down, place it on in your coupler and latch it in place,...

  • Do Icon Locks Hold Up To Job Site Theft On Big Tex Dump Trailer with Bulldog Coupler?
Dave, yes - this is where the ICON # AL38DQ 2-5/16" cast style lock shines (also available in flat lip style 2-5/16" # AL63DQ). It’s made from a single piece of hardened steel, strong and bulky enough to shrug off sledgehammer hits, and the anti-drill face just spins a drill bit if you try to drill it out. Most “jobsite thefts” happen fast but ICON forces a thief to spend 20+ minutes with power tools, which usually sends them packing it up and moving to an easier target. There's also some...

  • Is ICON Trailer Coupler Locks For Flat Lip And Cast Couplers Universal Or Custom Fit?
Alan, it comes down to coupler geometry, not universality in the traditional sense. The # AL63DQ covers the flat-lip coupler crowd which is common on travel trailers, while the # AL38DQ secures the cast-style coupler crowd which is more common on equipment trailers, but these are not concrete and can be found on others as well. Both are equally secure - they share the patented fins that block angle grinders and the anti-drill core. The flat lip has, well, a flatter more pronounced lip around...

  • Is The ICON AL26DQ 2" Lock As Durable As The 2-5/16" Model AL63DQ Coupler Lock?
Angela, it’s every bit as strong. The # AL26DQ uses the same ductile hardened steel as the 2-5/16inch models like # AL63DQ, and it has the same anti-drill, anti-saw features. Even under a sledgehammer, it just chips without breaking apart. So you’re not sacrificing security - just sizing down to fit your 2" coupler. Do you mainly store the trailer outdoors or in a garage?

  • Which Lock Fits A 2020 Jayco Eagle Travel Trailer With Demco Flat Lip 2-5/16" Coupler?
Brian, you’re right on the money - the # AL63DQ is made for flat-lip 2-5/16inch couplers like you’ll see on Jaycos and many other travel trailers. One thing that makes this lock stand out is the patented radial fin structure. It keeps angle grinders from getting a clean bite, so even if someone shows up with power tools, they’re going to have a very long, noisy night. Do you store your Jayco outdoors year-round or mostly in seasonal storage?

  • Which Heavy Duty Lock For Equipment Trailer With Demco Cast 2-5/16" Coupler?
Marcus, Demco makes both cast and flat-lip versions. If yours is cast (chunkier body, rounded nose), then the # AL38DQ is the match. The # AL63DQ is for flat lips - it likely wouldn't seat right on a cast. Both share the patented fins that stop 5" grinder wheels from getting in. Want to snap me a picture of your coupler? You can reply to this email if you'd like. But since you say you have demco cast coupler, the cast version is what I'd go with!

  • Should Trailer Dealers Order ICON Coupler Locks For Hit-N-Hitch Couplers Or Standard Couplers Onlyl?
Tony, I'd say so! The Hit-N-Hitch style has grown in popularity on mid-size RV and livestock trailers. Generic locks usually don’t fit them right, so having the # AL43DQ gives you a true solution to point customers toward if they have that coupler. If you don't already carry the more common standard ones, I'd recommend ordering some of the flat-lip # AL63DQ and cast # AL38DQ models. Those will likely be more popular for the average customer, unless they have the specific Hit-N-Hitch coupler...
